The following report was commissioned in 2000 to help the Government formulate policy on waste oil in the UK. It is of interest to all those involved in the collection or disposal of waste oil.

Most waste oil is currently burnt as replacement fuel in the UK. However, the European Waste Oil Directive requires that member states give priority to the processing of waste oils by regeneration where technical, economic and organizational constraints so allow. Furthermore, the Waste Incineration Directive, which the Government plans to implement at the end of 2002, will curtail demand for the replacement fuel that the waste oil industry supplies.

In order to address these concerns, DETR commissioned Oakdene Hollins to investigate the economics of the waste oils market in the UK.
