Requirement to Pre-Treat Non-Hazardous Wastes Destined
for Landfill & the Ban of Non-Hazardous Liquid Wastes to Landfill
Background
Regulation 10 of the Landfill
(England & Wales) Regulations 2002 specifies that landfills may only accept
waste that has been pre-treated, whilst Regulation 9 precludes landfill sites from
accepting liquid waste.
These regulations have
been in place for some time with regard to hazardous waste, from 30 October
2007, the requirements will also encompass non-hazardous waste.
Will This Affect Me
These regulatory changes
will be of particular importance to you if:
a) your waste is currently
being sent directly to a non-hazardous landfill site as a liquid, solid or sludge;
b) a liquid waste stream
you produce is currently being treated to a non-hazardous specification and then
disposed of,
in liquid form, to a non-hazardous landfill site.
Why is this changing
European legislation is driving a more sustainable approach to waste management across the EU. These changes are intended to reduce reliance on landfill and ensure
any future landfilling has less impact on our health and the environment.
These aims will be achieved in a number of ways and this requirement to treat waste
before it is landfilled is just one of them.
We operate
a number of PPC permitted treatment processes that will enable many waste streams
to be managed in full compliance with the new requirements.
If Chemical Recoveries
does not currently manage any of your waste that will be affected by the changes,
you may wish to contact your service provider to ensure that suitable provisions
will be in place by 30 October.
